Food waste

Utilization of food waste is a scourge of mankind. Huge volumes of daily production of products for different purposes lead to the formation of a large amount of food biological waste. The accumulation of such waste without disposal in the open space leads to an increase in the risk of epidemics, is a direct threat to the environment and human health.

According to the definition given in GOST 30772-2001 " resource Saving. Waste treatment. Terms and definitions", food waste is food that has lost all or part of its original consumer properties in the processes of their production, processing, use or storage.
According to the Federal waste classifier, food waste is classified as low-hazard or practically non-hazardous waste. But at the same time, there are strict requirements for the frequency of removal of such waste. In the temporary storage of waste should be excluded the possibility of decay and decomposition. Therefore, the shelf life in the cold season (at a temperature of-5 °C and below) should be no more than three days, in the warm time (at a plus temperature above +5 °C) no more than one day (daily export) (p. 2.2.1 SanPiN 42-128-4690-88 "Sanitary rules of the maintenance of territories of inhabited places").

The government of each region of the Russian Federation approves the Regulations, according to which the disposal of food waste should be carried out. The standard Regulations on the handling of food residues include the following main provisions:
- Export of unsuitable for the use of food and its processing, and also utilization and use as a forage for cattle shall be performed according to Veterinary and sanitary rules which were approved by the Chief veterinary inspector of Russia.
- Only special containers equipped with tight-fitting lids shall be used for waste collection.
- Containers for temporary storage of food residues may not be used for other purposes. Containers should be emptied daily and then rinsed with water.
- Food waste generated in kindergartens and schools is prohibited to be transferred to any organizations and individuals. In connection with this ban in
- For the temporary storage of waste, special platforms with a height of 12 cm sides should be built in order to prevent liquid effluents.
- Construction of sites is coordinated with Rosprirodnazor and Rospotrebnadzor, and installation of containers – with local health authority.
- Export and utilization of food waste from educational institutions should be engaged in a specialized company with which the management of the school or kindergarten signed a contract.

When recycling food waste, their irrevocable destruction and processing are used. The choice of technology depends on the type of raw materials by origin and physical properties (solid, soft, liquid food waste). At the moment, the most popular are the following ways:
- Storage in landfills of municipal solid wastes. Waste is disposed of in waste disposal facilities made to SRWDS and there subjected to disposal.
- Heat treatment, combustion. Waste incinerators and special boilers are used for recycling.
- Processing using microorganisms (biological). The most common method is composting.

In addition to food waste, waste of vegetable and animal fats and oils is generated. These types of waste are typical for food enterprises, restaurants, cafes, etc.the Daily volume of their production depends on the scale and capacity of production, as well as the specifics of the enterprise.
In most cases, it is not dangerous to humans substances, but very harmful to the environment. The main difficulty in the disposal of fats is their insolubility in water. These substances are strictly forbidden to merge into water bodies or rivers, as this will lead to an environmental disaster. Oils and fats are forbidden to be disposed of in the sewer, as this leads to clogging of pipes, and the removal of such a blockage will require significant costs.

Despite the fact that this type of waste is low-risk, their disposal should be carried out in accordance with the standards of the Russian Federation, regulating this sphere of activity. In accordance with the Letter of the Ministry of agriculture of Russia from 06.04.2015 N VG-13-23/4402 "to provide clarification on the issue of referring to biological waste waste containing animal fats" this group includes waste containing animal fats and the FCCW.
